Characters: Flavio, Arianna, Chloe
Word count: ~300
Notes/warnings: Spiders.
“Are you ready, Sir Flavio? Let me know when you’re comfortable, and we can begin.”
“I’m not comfortable. I’m never going to be comfortable. This is the worst.”
“It’s not the worst at all! I think this is a very brave and admirable thing you’re doing. Just remember that your friends are here, and you’re perfectly safe.”
“Perfectly safe, yeah…”
“That’s the spirit! Now, I’m going to slowly introduce our first guest.”
“Perfectly safe, perfectly safe…”
“Look how small it is. I think it’s quite cute! The green and black stripes are fetching, and it has those adorable sparkly eyes -”
“Eight of them.”
“Um, Dame Chloe, while that’s true, I don’t think it’s the most helpful addition to make at this early stage.”
“Perfectly safe perfectly safe perfectly safe -”
“Where was I… Many spiders are beneficial to people! They eat other bugs that might otherwise create problems for us, and they just like to be left alone to do it! We’ll take this little one back where we found it in just a minute. Actually, Dame Chloe, where did you find it?”
“Linen closet.”
“In the linen closet? Where the linens are? The sheets are full of s - sp - those?”
“Deep breaths, Sir Flavio.”
“Perfectly safe perfectly safe perfectly safe pleasegodperfectlysafe -”
“Small spiders like this one can be a helpful ally to the conscientious housekeeper. While you don’t want them to upset the guests, and some think they make a building look less tidy, they aren’t aggressive at all! And as I said, they reduce the population of other small pests who may be actually harmful.”
“They trap them in webs and inject them full of an acid that dissolves their organs.”
“…Oh, no. We’ve lost him. Dame Chloe -”
“What? I think it’s cool.”
2. Forer Effect
Characters: Arianna, Bertrand
Word count: ~350
Notes/warnings: Second stratum, based on an idle conversation. I don't know shit about tarot, so I'm sure I got the terminology wrong.
"Sir Bertrand, may I have a moment of your time?"
"Yeah, go ahead."
"You may recall, I read the cards for our other companions yesterday evening -"
"I remember. Chloe's been cackling about it ever since. The hell did you tell her? She won't tell me."
"Her fortune was very favorable."
"Favorable for Chloe, sure, but what about humanity in general?"
"Whatever do you mean?"
"If you don't get it yet, you will. So. Tarot cards. What about 'em?"
"You expressed disinterest at the time, but I was having so much fun that after the others retired, I wanted to read another spread."
"So you did one for yourself, and it told you, what? How does this affect me? Did the cards tell you you need the wisdom of your elders or somesh - uh, something?"
"I have the utmost respect for my elders, I assure you, and if you have any wisdom to offer, I would be glad to hear it. But, um, the cards that I read weren't for myself. I took the liberty of doing a reading for you in your absence."
"Oh boy."
"I apologize for disrespecting your wishes, but... May I tell you what it said?"
"Sure, whatever. I could use a laugh."
"Sir Bertrand. You've walked a long road to get here, full of pain and hardship. There is a darkness from your past that still threatens to consume you. But you have an important choice still ahead of you. You should try to recognize it as a choice when that time comes, and not simply keep forging on with what you've always done. You aren't bound to suffer in the same way forever, but you'll have to keep your eyes and your heart open."
"That it?"
"Yes. Thank you for hearing me out."
"See? It's just like I said. Your concern is cute, kid. But how about you worry about your own future, and leave mine to me. All these little fortune-telling tricks people swear by... They're all so generic they could apply to anyone."
3. Fix
Characters: Chloe, Bertrand
Word count: ~200
Notes/warnings: Pre-canon.
“I can fix your arm, you know.”
“What?”
“It's always bandaged. It's taking years to get better. I can fix it.”
“Oh. Uh, no, thanks, it's fine. It's not hurt or anything. Don't worry about it.”
“If it's not hurt, why does it make you sad?”
“What are you talking about? I'm not - I don't get sad.”
“That's what I thought. But Mom said even grown-ups have feelings, and that's why I shouldn't be rude to them.”
“And the lesson didn't take, huh.”
“What do you mean?”
“You're being kinda rude right now, Chloe.”
“It's not rude to help.”
“Except sometimes it is. Just leave it, okay? It's not your business. I'm fine. That's all you need to know.”
“Then is it a style choice? The bandages. They don't make you look tough or cool. They make it look like somebody else beat you up.”
“Gee, thanks. I make all my choices based on whether they'll impress a nine-year-old.”
“You should. I'm very smart.”
“That's the scary part.”
“You looked at your hand just now.”
“No I didn't.”
