Dear Trick or Treat creator,

Hello, and happy [fall or spring]! I'm requesting what is for me a fairly eclectic mix of stuff, and generally speaking I'm down for either fic or art, falling along a pretty broad spectrum tone-wise; I hope something in this letter speaks to you, but if not, please go right ahead and ignore my prompts and make something you'll have fun with.

Whatever we matched on, if you want to check out any of the other canons, these are pretty low-investment:
  • "Broken Bride" (Youtube link to full album) is a ~30-minute sci-fi concept album from the guys behind "Love Me Dead," "Lake Pontchartrain," "Whipped Cream," and similar
  • A Monster in Paris is a 90-minute animated movie with a really cute bug monster; it was available on US Netflix last I checked
  • Lake of Voices is a free atmospheric-horror visual novel with gen and m/f endings plus one f/f route; it took me maybe 3-4 hours to get all endings, but it may go faster for you if you're a more experienced VN player.

Ghost Trick, Hollow Knight, and Fire Emblem 8 are bigger time sinks, but recommended if you like, respectively, twisty supernatural mysteries, Metroidvanias (with cute bugs!), or just a very solid tactical RPG. There are also LPs for each of them in the places where you would expect to find LPs. My requests are going to spoil the hell out of Ghost Trick in particular, and the mystery is much more fun to solve unspoiled, so if you'd like to try it someday, you might wanna skip that section of my letter.

General likes, opt-ins, DNWs

Fandom-specific prompts: Ghost Trick | Hollow Knight | Lake of Voices | Broken Bride | A Monster in Paris | Fire Emblem: the Sacred Stones

Fic likes: Humor, friendship, adventure, worldbuilding, missing scenes, character study, interactions between characters who don't normally share a lot of page- or screentime, bittersweetness, hope in the face of adversity. Angst, complicated family dynamics, body horror, deathfic.

Art likes: Pretty much all the same subject matter I like in fic, but I also like seeing illustrations of slice-of-life stuff with characters going about their days, or cool scenes in canon, or badass poses. Or just a portrait of any of my faves, honestly! Any rendering style is cool.

Opt-ins: Major character death (except where specifically DNW'd), graphic depictions of violence (ditto), first person, second person, outsider POV, interactive fiction, comics, pretty much any experimentation you want to do with form or style. (However, no pressure to go elaborate if you don't want to. I also like short fic and simple lineart. I am hard to alienate on that front!)

A note on tricks: I'm requesting some people dying, being dead, being undead, and/or getting roughed up. However, I'm not into super realistic gore or eroguro. Any amount of superficial blood is fine, skeletons are fine (at a certain level of abstraction I think skulls and ribcages are pretty!), and I'm cool with hearts and lungs (especially if it's Symbolic somehow), but not super big on organs beyond that; my gore DNWs are listed below. For Hollow Knight, I am down for canon-typical levels of, like, cracked exoskeletons with Weird Goo seeping out of them, or stuff exploding into motes. I basically just don't want to see a whole mess of viscera, regardless of species!

Stuff I DO like for this:
  • Hand trauma
  • Broken noses
  • Weird eyes (whether through injury, inherently being like that, or dramatic lighting; glowing eyes, asymmetrical eyes, eyes hidden in shadow, bloodshot eyes, wrong colored sclera, weird irises, weird pupils, NO irises/pupils, wrong number of irises/pupils, wrong number or location of eyes)
  • Blood on face. Blood on hands. The character's own blood is my favorite, but other people's blood is good too
  • The character's emotional state as they are dying/being dead/being undead/getting roughed up. Fear? Anger? Defiance? Sorrow? Resignation? Looking weirdly beatific about this whole business?

General DNWs:
  • Shipping DNWs:
    • Explicit sexual content (implied or fade-to-black is fine; art-wise I also would prefer to see no genitals even if they are not currently in use)
    • Non-con
    • Unrequested incest
    • Unrequested adult/underage ships
  • AU DNWs:
    • Mundane AUs for canons with supernatural elements
    • Modern AUs for non-modern canons
    • Animal characters getting non-canonical human forms
  • Plot element DNWs:
    • Pregnancy
    • Non-canonical child characters
    • Gender or sexual orientation as sources of angst/conflict
    • Non-canonical death by suicide (canonical suicides or suicides-by-proxy are fine; ideation or attempts not resulting in death are fine whether canon or not)
  • Biological realities I would prefer not to encounter in a gift, please!:
    • Vomit (this includes hairballs, and also that thing where some bugs preemptively hose down their food with digestive juices. Regardless of species, I am not into this)
    • Feces (where pets are involved, a brief reference to cleaning up after them is okay)
    • Exposed brain tissue
    • Exposed intestinal tissue
    • Bugs or other invertebrates getting squashed/crushed/splattered
  • The photosensitive migraine section:
    • Rapidly flashing/strobing images
    • White text on black background

GHOST TRICK
  • Sissel
  • Yomiel
  • Trick or Treat / Art or Fic

Fandom-specific DNWs: Permadeath or on-screen graphic injury for Sissel; shipfic (background Jowd/Alma, Yomiel/fiancée!Sissel, or Jowd/Cabanela is fine, but I'm here primarily for gen).

The main message I took from Ghost Trick is “your pets love you, even if you are a horrifying vengeful spirit.” Therefore, I am interested in Sissel being the best of all possible cats, Yomiel being a sinister dead guy, or both at once. It is also fine if Yomiel is a very sad dead guy, or, post-game, some type of alive guy. Canon divergence AUs are welcome.

Treats
  • Sweet, funny, or bittersweet Sissel & Yomiel moments pregame. I wanna see this sad creepy ghost taking good care of his cat and his cat really not caring about the creepy ghost part. Yomiel buying pet supplies. Local possessed corpse taking his cat to the vet, weirding out all the alive people in the waiting room. (Brainwave: YOMIEL USING HIS MANIPULATOR POWERS TO IMPROVISE CAT TOYS FOR SISSEL?)
  • Sissel friendship with anyone, at any point postgame (or, heck, during the game's timeframe when he still thinks he's a human, if you can work that in somehow). Yomiel aside, I'm most interested in his attachments to Missile, Lynne, Jowd, or Kamila. I love his extremely cat-like way of looking out for people, where he'll do anything he can to help, provided he has some justification in place to explain that this is totally for his own benefit too...
  • What are Sissel's domestic arrangements postgame? How does he like life with the Jowd family? Once Yomiel's out of prison, does he split his time between households at all?
  • (A big Sissel and Yomiel reunion once Yomiel does get out: EXTREMELY WELCOME)
  • What IS Yomiel doing after prison? (Does he still do art?)

Tricks
  • Look, I like spooky blue glowy junk, and I like seeing things move in unnatural ways, so this game's central mechanic is INHERENTLY relevant to my interests. Art or fic that leans into unnerving ghostly light, or people or objects getting puppeteered around, would be just glorious.
  • Art-specific prompt but uh, my kingdom for a screencap redraw of the Yomiel vs. Cabanela confrontation in the junkyard super's office, just any part of that sequence, it's mad creepy and I love it to death.
  • AU where Yomiel's deal with the blue people actually works out and he gets a functioning body but this does not solve his problems, he is still a sad dead guy who has done many crimes.
  • Just, generally, The Hideous Loneliness of Being a Dead Guy (or a Stray Cat)
  • Freaky pregame Manipulator shenanigans! How did Yomiel start building this sinister and inscrutable brand? Did things ever go wrong, e.g. before he had a full handle on his powers? Were there, e.g., nasty consequences for the living?
  • Weird identity stuff with ghost!Sissel encountering Yomiel during the events of the game.
  • Postgame, there is just something subtly weird about this cat. Not malign, no, not threatening, but... unsettling? (blue glowy junk a bonus here too! Or something vaguely Halloweeny? Is Halloween even a thing in GT universe? It should be.)

HOLLOW KNIGHT
  • Zote the Mighty
  • Trick or Treat / Art or Fic

Fandom-specific DNW: Zote/anyone. Bretta's canon crush is fine, I just don't want any actual romance or sex to happen to this guy.

Hollow Knight is full of lush environments, cute bugs, creepy-cool lore, and all this gorgeous body horror...

...and because I have no taste, my favorite character is Zote. I love all that other stuff, don't get me wrong, but I have a certain fondness for annoying Miles Gloriosus types, and this guy is top-tier. He's funny, he's pathetic, he's wall to wall unjustified grandiosity, and some of his precepts (a kind soul has collected all the text here) carry a distinct undercurrent of “whoa buddy are you okay???” Which raises the question: if someone is not okay, but too impenetrably stupid to understand this, are they actually doing great?

I honestly don't know how to distinguish between tricks and treats for this guy so I'm just gonna dump all prompts into a general-purpose pile...

  • What the hell is a Zote? I am down with the theory that he is a failed early vessel but I am also down with the theory that he's just some delusional guy from a really shitty family. I am interested in every possible take on this!
  • Rejected Precepts of Zote.
  • An experience that led to the development of one of the extant precepts. (“Eggshells are brittle”? “Don't trust mirrors”?)
  • Zote generally being an unreliable narrator – a bad thing happens to him that he doesn't recognize as such because he's rewriting it into a mythic encounter in his head? A good thing happens to him that he also doesn't recognize as such because he's Zote? A narrow escape whereof he has no conception that he almost died? (Heck, maybe he straight-up DOES die but right to the last minute, he thinks he totally pulled that one off?)
  • Feel free to do canon-typical body horror to this terrible little man.
  • Would genuinely love to see how any other Dirtmouth residents react to this guy.
  • Also so curious what Zote would make of the Abyss. (I mean, let's be honest, he probably sees nothing weird about it, but all these dead Vessels sure do look like him...)
  • How did he make Life Ender, and how elaborate of a mythos is he building around it?

LAKE OF VOICES
  • Kikka
  • Bemelle
  • Margret
  • The Guide
  • Lu
  • Trick / Art; feel free to ignore my preferences for additional gifts

As I have mentioned in other parts of this letter: I like spooky glowing and I like things that move weird. Per the art of the prowler in the bonus scenario, the Nixi have their rib cage and pelvis facing opposite directions and kind of flop their spine over backwards to get these masses into a relatively humanoid alignment? THAT'S DOPE. The glowing eyes are DOPE. I also like spooky bodies of water, spooky mist-shrouded bridges, last stands, characters in a state of abject fear, and people looking pretty while they drown, so there are options!

Tricks
  • Any human character getting drowned, dragged off a bridge, overwhelmed by big shadowy goop monsters, etc. Please and thank you. Any canonical death or any new hypothetical death that strikes you as #aesthetic.
  • Kikka swordfighting the Nixi. Bemelle swordfighting the Nixi. That one bad ending where they die swordfighting a bunch of Nixi back to back!
  • Anything involving Margret setting shit on fire. This lady only has one plan, but hey, it almost always works.
  • The Guide killing Garvyn. How did he do it? Was he wearing Garvyn's face at the time? Or maybe he was in monster form killing the shit out of a guy who looks like the guy we know as the Guide? (What I'm saying is give me some identity weirdness. Kill your double etc etc)
  • Lu and his hand trauma and his weird white blood and stuff. Rough this kid UP.
  • More subtly foreboding atmospheric stuff! Creepy lake! Creepy eyes in the deep! The survivors on the midway island bracing themselves for what's to come! Lu or the Guide just being more or less obviously inhuman!
  • Or some postgame brooding type of stuff! No matter the ending, Kikka failed in her responsibility to get everyone out alive. If Bemelle lives, he failed too; he can also potentially be SUPER messed up over Lu's apparent suicide. If Margret lives, she's watched one or more people die and now knows she's been chasing a lie. Show me human survivors having a hard time grappling with what happened on Sinnlos. They got to the beach, but at what cost?

Treats? Fic?
I'm so hung up on wanting elaboration on the game's great spooky visuals that I don't know what to prompt as far as lighter fare, or written work. I'd be happy to get it, I just can't give much guidance! I will say that while I like Lu's route from a lore perspective and I like the Guide's bad ending from an emotionally significant drownings perspective, Kikka/Lu and Kikka/Guide don't do much for me as ships. So, from the ending where Kikka stays on the lake, I'd love gen worldbuilding, lore speculation, or introspective character stuff. If she leaves Sinnlos alive... well, ditto on worldbuilding/lore/introspection, but shipping her with Bemelle or Margret is also cute.

BROKEN BRIDE - LUDO (ALBUM)
  • Any
  • Trick / Art or fic; feel free to ignore my preferences for additional gifts

Normally, when a character is unhinged by grief for a loved one, my horrifying coping method of preference is necromancy. However, this utterly bonkers rock opera sold me on an alternate strategy: doing a really bad job at time travel.

The album sketches out the bare bones of the plot and then covers it in ridiculous set pieces and big messy feelings while hopscotching genres between pop rock, emo, metal, and Moog solos. I love this. Please feel free to throw a bunch of cool stuff in a blender and not sweat the details. Some kind of freaky visual or some sense of grief, fear, anger, and/or hubristic determination to give the middle finger to known physical constants is truly all that is required. That said, if you do want to fill in gaps, I also love lore and vaguely plausible technobabble. Basically I would like fic or art that either builds out the narrative some, or doubles down on the emotional and/or aesthetic content of any of the songs.

Tricks
  • I find it interesting that the Traveler views the pterodactyls and other such with religious horror – “a demon shrieks;” a “thing with wings of reaper's cloth” - and has to spend two entire tracks psyching himself up to deal with them, then by the end he's confronting the Rapture like, nbd, “I've got dragons of my own,” I'll just save the day with science. Is this a prompt or am I writing a 9th-grade English paper? I don't know, I'm just saying
  • On that note. Whether in the future or the past, whether in art or in prose, please... show me some gnarly reptiles
  • Those 15 years after the Bride's death – what did they look like? How did the Traveler decide on this course of action, what resources did he have at his disposal (did he have friends, family, colleagues, anybody else around he ended up alienating with his increasingly evident batshittery)? Is there frantic scribbling of diagrams on whiteboards? Does this isolation feel different from being trapped in a cave by pterodactyls with LITERALLY no humans around? Does it impact his decision to sacrifice for all those future people?
  • PRIOR to the Bride's death, was there any indication the Traveler was gonna get this... uh... intense? Crawl into your grave next to you, never get over it, and build a time machine intense? Would prefer to see their relationship shown as loving and mutual, and non-con remains a DNW, but... I do not by any means need it to look healthy.
  • Given the state of the world in “The Lamb and the Dragon,” clearly the Boy getting everyone to rally around him in “Save Our City” didn't end up helping much long-term. How long did it take things to deteriorate? Was the Boy around to see it? (Was he around to see the Traveler show up and save the day?)
  • If you wanna Rule 63 the Traveler, I'm here for it. I love the Guy Who Does Irresponsible Science Because he Misses his Wife archetype, but I think women should also sometimes miss their wives and do irresponsible science about it

A MONSTER IN PARIS
  • Lucille
  • Francoeur
  • Treat / Art or fic; feel free to ignore my preferences for additional gifts

Fandom-specific DNWs: Major character death; graphic depictions of violence; shipfic (background mentions of canon relationships or Raoul's deeply romantic attachment to his van are fine, but I prefer a gen focus here).

Treats
  • All the outfits in this movie are so freaking good. I mentioned in my art likes that I'm cool with just getting straight-up portraits of my requested characters even if they're doing nothing in particular, right? Because Lucille and Francoeur both have some excellent looks in this movie and if you draw me any of them I will be delighted. (Let the bug wear a cute hat!!!)
  • Would love some slice-of-life or backstory stuff for Lucille! I love her style, her attitude, her integrity, and her categorical refusal to put up with shit from anybody. How'd she get where she is? How does she maintain herself in her career? Does she aspire to more, or is she where she wants to be?
  • Francoeur, restored to monster size, trying to ingratiate himself once again to the people of Paris. But hopefully more successfully this time! Maybe in between performances with Lucille he does odd jobs, works for the scientist, accompanies Raoul on delivery runs, or helps Emile and Maud with movies?
  • Francoeur and Lucille being friends and creative partners and also, a tiny lady protecting a really big bug, is beyond precious, and I want more of that. That's pretty much it.

FIRE EMBLEM: THE SACRED STONES
  • L'Arachel
  • Trick or Treat / Art or fic

L'Arachel is my favorite. I love Fire Emblem's eccentric staff-wielding ladies in general, and L'Arachel is quite simply the best one. I love her astronomically huge ego, her obstinacy, her sense of drama, the angsty past she refuses to dwell on (refuses, do you hear me!!), and those rare startling moments when we see how astute and competent she can be at need. She is so great! And she knows it! And she's not going to stop until everyone else knows it too!

Rennac/L'Arachel is my favorite ship, and L'Arachel & Dozla & Rennac are my favorite comedy relief trio. However, I could also go for shipping her with Eirika, Innes, or Joshua. Or bounce her off someone she doesn't canonically interact with! Artur? Moulder? Natasha? Tethys? Tana?

Treats
  • Canon-typical shenanigans with her retainers! Smiting monsters! Showing up to battle 15 minutes late with Starbucks! Failing at traveling incognito because she is so fancy and so strange! Does she actually not understand how money works or is she being deliberately obtuse?
  • This girl has had a weird and lonely life. Please give her some actual friendships. How is she even going to handle those? If Eirika's any indication, she will probably alternate between weird flexes and showering her friends in extravagant gifts whether they want them or not. Maybe she strong-arms random other women into joining her for tea parties (wherein she probably dominates the conversation and leads it in some really odd directions).
  • Would honestly love some outsider PoV on L'Arachel and her crew from people in Rausten (court functionaries? Commoners? Other nobles? King Mansel?) because she seems fairly well-liked but she's also very forceful and likes to do things like “employ a thief” and “randomly fuck off across the continent on a journey to do good deeds... and get lost out there...”
  • On the shippy front, I feel like any get-together with L'Arachel consists of her announcing “I have decided to bestow my favor upon you and you are honored beyond measure,” which is hilarious, but I'm actually more curious about established relationship stuff. How do she and a partner – potentially a co-ruler! - learn to work with and around each other?

Tricks
  • So there's lots of monsters and undead to fight on this continent, right? And L'Arachel considers it her duty to fight them? There are a lot of ways this could get spooky. A pitched battle in some creepy forest, a narrow escape, a spooky investigation into where they're all coming from, a familiar face returning from the dead...
  • Hey, on that note – what if she does die like her parents? Fighting monsters and stuff? How is she going to make her last stand?
  • Maybe Eirika (or somebody else) gets her to actually talk about her fears sometime. Maybe things get... surprisingly angsty.
  • I don't personally do the gacha thing, but I hear from friends who do play Heroes that L'Arachel can get pretty into Halloween. I would like to see this woman attempt to win at Halloween, in the same way she attempts to win at things like dancing and seafood.
