"And of course I'm very happy for him, but I do want grandchildren, you know."
"I know, Mom."
"And he shouldn't limit himself like that. He needs to get better at keeping his options open. That foreign exchange student, for example - where was he from? Gallia? - clearly interested in Soren. And so strapping. When you get an opportunity like that, you take advantage of it. His boyfriend would never have to know."
"You didn't... tell him that, did you?"
"Of course I did. He asked me if I was off my medication. Medication, Pelleas. As if to imply I were some kind of crazy person! And he made sure everyone in the cafe heard him."
"He probably thought you were trying to steal Ike for yourself."
"I was. That's not the point." Sigh. "And now he's not taking my calls."
"He keeps his phone turned off, Mom. He's never taken anyone's calls. If he wants to talk, he'll call you."
"I don't care whether he wants to talk. I want to talk to him." A long pause. "He's so inconsiderate. Sometimes I feel like you're the only son I have."
"...Um."
"You're so dutiful. So much more attentive to your poor old mother. You would never call my sanity into question in front of a room full of the common people, would you?"
"Mom, please -"
"Of course you wouldn't. You're a sweet boy."
"...Thanks, but -"
"You know, my only regret is that I barely got to hold you or Soren when you were babies. I'm very proud of both of you, of course, but it makes such a difference. I have a strong mothering instinct, Pelleas -"
"I know."
"- so it's not unreasonable for me to feel I've been deprived. What was that? Were you being sarcastic with me, young man?" He elects not to answer, so she huffs slightly and rattles on. "And that's why, like I said earlier, grandchildren are so important. And if Soren's not cooperating, that means you have to get someone pregnant."
He chokes a little. "Mom, I'm twenty, isn't that a bit -"
"No, no, get it over with early. That's how I'm still so beautiful even with two handsome full-grown sons. Make me some grandchildren, Pelleas. But not with that girl you're seeing. She's no good for you."
"I'm not seeing anyone."
"Oh! So you dumped the slut? Congratulations! I think a celebration's in order - I'll come by after work and -"
"Micaiah is not a slut! We were never dating, she's just - she's a very good friend. Please don't talk about her like that."
"Hmm. Fine. You probably wouldn't lie to me. But, sweetie? I'm serious about this. You find a girl, and you run her by me."
"Sure. Okay. I'll... be sure to do that, Mom."
"And next time you see Soren, tell him to have the decency to send Skrimir my way if he's not going to hit that."
