I liked PoR!Makalov a lot better, too. It's probably partly because we see a lot more of him, and while I can't quite put my finger on it, there's also something about his dynamic with Astrid in RD that bugs me. Maybe she crossed some kind of fangirling event horizon, I don't know.
...You may be right re: her family. I was just going off some vague recollection of her having said she wished she had a sibling at some point in one of the games, though it's since occurred to me she might've just said she wanted a brother and actually had a bajillion sisters... Or I could be making all this up, of course. o_o
