fe_drabble, but out of a sneaking suspicion that my writing chops have deserted me, I can't stop editing it omg halp. I'm posting it and then running off to class so I don't have to see it for awhile, and hopefully if someone else sees it, it will stop behaving like Schrodinger's Fic ("until you take the lid off, it's both awesome and terrible at once!")
“Rhys! Hey, Rhys, you got a minute?” Silence, then rustling noises. “Did I even get the right tent?” More rustling. “Oh, yeah, there we go. Do you know anything about reading tea leaves?”
An odd question under any circumstances, but especially odd as a pretext for invading someone else’s tent in the dark of night. Dawn had to be two hours away, at least. Still, he tried to be accommodating. “Mrph?” Better try that again. “Um, good morning, Mia.”
“Is it morning already? Wow.”
Rhys blinked the grit of remarkably few hours’ sleep from his eyes and tried not to sound too hopeful: “You said something about tea?”
“Yeah, Boyd and I were on watch, so Oscar brought us some. Here, look at this.” Mia pushed a mug into his hands, or at least something that was vaguely warm and sort of shaped like one.
“Ah, what am I looking at?” Until he could talk his eyes into focusing properly, there wasn’t much point in asking, but it was only polite.
“In the bottom. There’s something sorta shaped like a shield, do you see it?”
After several moments’ scrutiny revealed nothing more definitive than that the mug contained something slightly darker than the rest of the darkness, he tried to hand it back. “I’m sorry, my night vision’s terrible.”
“No, no, keep looking. You can’t miss it.”
“Oh. Why, yes, um, there it is,” he said lamely. “A shield. Definitely.”
“I knew it! And if you see it, too, then that means…”
“That means what?” He decided to hold on to the mug for a little longer. His hands were cold.
“Well, a shield is for protecting people, right?” Her voice bore traces of a thoughtful frown. “So… if I’m the shield…”
To say she suddenly put a hand on his shoulder would have been a gross understatement, conveying none of the sheer violence of the event. Then again, the common language had always been lacking in words that applied to Mia, and probably wouldn’t catch up to her for some years yet.
“That’s it, then. From here on out, I’m going to protect you, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.”
Rhys turned the mug around in his hands, nonplussed. He blinked. He cleared his throat. “Thank you, Mia, I really appreciate –”
She snorted. “You don’t have to thank me. It’s destiny, remember?” There was a pause. She let go of him, and then said very seriously, “You should get some sleep. You don’t look too good.”
“Um, actually –”
“If I’m going to be protecting you, you gotta start taking better care of yourself. Otherwise we both look silly.”
“To tell the truth, I –”
“Hey, what time would you say it is, anyway?”
“I don’t know. The sun should be up soon, I guess.”
“Oh. Then I’ve got a duel to get to.”
“Someone accepted your challenge?”
“Of course. Destiny.” Pause. “What are you doing up this late, anyway? It’s bad for you.”
