1. Greil doesn't hire dullards, and anyone who wants to join up is going to have to prove his intelligence. When he hears this, Shinon nods approvingly, but can't help shooting a sidelong glance at Gatrie. Well, it's better to part ways before you know someone too well.

2. Later, Gatrie flashes a lopsided, apologetic grin, trying to apologize for his literacy. Shinon, feeling betrayed, refuses to talk to him for all of fifteen minutes before finally snapping, red-faced, "You gonna help me out, or just sit there looking at me?"

3. It doesn't take long. Shinon attacks the task like the written word insulted his mother - only, Gatrie reflects, Shinon insults her all the time, and this constitutes the only mention he ever makes of his family. He doesn't wonder what happened, only why Shinon won't tell him.

4. Greil hires them both on the same day, smiling enigmatically. Shinon mentally files Gatrie away as a complete sap, wondering what the hell possessed him to give up months of pay just to avoid leaving someone he barely knew behind.

5. Years later, Shinon will go on an epic tirade about how much Greil's lowered his standards, if that idiot Boyd can get in without meeting any difficulty. Gatrie will, at intervals, laugh hysterically. Shinon's annoyance will be motivated primarily by interest in his reputation.

6. Titania is a hell of a woman, and she is flattered, she says, by Gatrie's attention. She turns him down, just like Shinon said she would, and then Shinon calls him an idiot. But he doesn't mind, because Shinon will express his sympathy later, like always, by buying drinks.

7. Gatrie doesn't take advantage of it too often, but he quickly learns that getting turned down by a girl is a surefire way to get Shinon to pick up the tab. And probably the only way.

8. A recurrent conversation:
Gatrie: 'S like I keep saying. You act like a jerk, but I know your heart's in the right place.
Shinon: ...You're wasted. Better let me drink that.
Gatrie: See? You're always thinking of me.

9. If he feels like getting punched that night, Gatrie will sometimes add that Shinon is "like a girlfriend, only better."

10. He stops saying this the night Shinon points out that of course he's better than a girlfriend, because every girlfriend Gatrie has ever had has been a con artist, and who is it who goes out and gets the money back every stinkin' time?

11. Everyone likes Gatrie. He's often asked why he hangs around that angry-looking archer guy, and never sure how to answer. "He's really good about offering to rough up anybody who messes with me" doesn't seem to convey the right sentiment.

12. People ask Shinon how a jerk like him got a friend like Gatrie. He shrugs, looks annoyed, and says "hell if I know. Can't get rid of him."

13. Gatrie is usually in earshot when this happens.

14. People who expect him to get upset are always sorely disappointed.

15. Shinon has always believed that he knows best. In every situation. Unconditionally. Gatrie tends to go along, because things always turn out all right eventually. So it's Shinon who decides, after Greil dies, that they're leaving, and Gatrie agrees, suppressing his misgivings. It's been eight years. He trusts Shinon implicitly.

16. It's also Shinon who decides that Gatrie should accept the job with House Damiell. Gatrie doesn't know why. Shinon hates nobles, after all, and this means he'll be alone again, like before.

17. "Shut up," he says by way of explanation, and by the next morning he's moved on. Better to part ways before you know someone too well, but it's still salvageable.

18. They meet again in Tor Garen. Shinon, who in addition to nursing a broken rib has never been demonstrative, does not appreciate the bear hug he receives from Gatrie. ("...And stop crying. You're an embarrassment.")

19. True to form, he does not pay for any of their drinks that night.

20. But only because he's broke.
