3SF round-up, week 1
Here's some stuff I wrote for the three-sentence ficathon.
FE8, Vanessa > Innes
It makes perfect sense that Prince Innes took up the bow: he'll be king someday, and the pegasus knights will be his to call on, and any serious tactician must know the strengths of each unit - and its vulnerabilities.
He knows my weakness, Vanessa thinks, with a weird thrill every time she takes to the air in his defense, and every time an arrow of his streaks unerringly through the space where she used to be. He knows my strength.
FE9/10, Shinon & Rolf
At some point between the wars Uncle Shinon stops acting like their archery lessons are some big deadly secret - no more sneaking around, just, "hey Rolf, go grab us some lunch and I'll show you something cool."
One day Mist says, "Rolf, I haven't seen you at mealtimes all week," and Rolf figures, Oh, that's what he's doing, I'm how he gets out of being social.
But that can't be all, because Uncle Shinon never says anything nice if he can help it, and he says Rolf is a natural.
FE15, Kamui > Leon > Valbar
Kamui keeps wanting to double-check - after all, it's been a couple months since he last asked, stuff could've changed. He keeps wanting to ask, "Okay, but seriously, Leon, if I was into men, would you...?"
But that's the wrong question - Leon's out there losing sleep over a guy who isn't into men already.
FFVI, Setzer/Daryl
You don't get what you're supposed to have, and you don't get what you deserve - you get what the universe decides to give you that day. You get lucky.
You get a woman like Daryl blowing into your life, and -
some part of him is thinking, grimly, the whole while he's searching for the place the Falcon went down: No run of good luck ever lasts this long.
FFVI, Gogo & Relm
"Okay, Gogo," says Relm, and sets out a different set of paint pots exactly where her own were - "Can you do what I just did?"
Gogo nods, and over the next forty minutes they produce an almost exact copy of the painting Relm just made, only in different colors - plus the movements of the brush are identical, so there's no adjustment for the way that yellow mixed up a little too runny, but it's - a solid outing.
"Huh," says Relm, inspecting the canvas, "I'm not sure how I wanna use this yet, but you stick with me and we're gonna make some really weird art."
